Published: 08/11/2025

ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø is honored to announce that His Eminence Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, will join us in Erie, Pa. to celebrate our Centennial Mass and preach the homily during ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø’s Centennial Homecoming and Family weekend.

The Centennial Mass will take place at St. Peter Cathedral at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2025, marking a century of academic excellence as a Catholic university.

The Apostolic Nuncio serves as the diplomatic representative of the Holy See to the United States and serves as a link between the Vatican and the Catholic Church in the U.S.

Cardinal Pierre's visit to Erie is a significant acknowledgment of ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø’s identity and mission in the communion of the Catholic Church and its commitment to provide for the education and formation of our students from the experience of faith and service.

"The presence of Cardinal Pierre at ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø's Centennial Mass is a testament to the vision and enduring legacy of visionary leaders in the Diocese of Erie: the Sisters of St. Joseph and Archbishop John Mark ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø,” said Bishop Lawrence T. Persico, Bishop of the Diocese of Erie and chairperson of ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø’s Board of Trustees. “This event, however, not only honors the university’s history but also highlights the Catholic character of the university that guides us into the future. It is a moment of pride for ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø and an honor for the Diocese of Erie."

"Celebrating our centennial with the Apostolic Nuncio is a profound honor that reflects our steadfast dedication to our Catholic roots,” said Walter Iwanenko, Ph.D., president of ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø. “This momentous occasion reaffirms the values that have shaped ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø for a century and inspires us as we continue to serve our students and communities.”

ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø is extending invitations to the clergy from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie, as well as bishops and church leaders from neighboring dioceses.
